Artist Statement
My interest and spiritual connection to the natural world has led me to many self discoveries. I started down this path in 2011 by selling my work and teaching Mandala classes in 2012 at my Black Butterfly Studio. Currently a student in the Aboriginal Visual Arts program at the NB College of Craft and Design, I intend to practise the many art forms created by both First Nations people and regional immigrants. I’ve found joy in the beauty of Mi’kmaq and Maliseet culture and craft. It inspires me to find my own path as a visual artist and basket maker, while continuing to honour and respect the tradition and values of the First Nations people.
I intend to pursue and refine basketry as practiced by the people of this region, emulating and reproducing a body of work so to gain understanding and insight into the product of the times. It should also consider the ancient culture that was native to the land my ancestors came from. I am in the process of creating fusion of these many cultures and experiences in my work, ready to take it to a new level, based on my own experiences and understanding of the materials and subject matter.
I am currently in a new studio space, where I'll be creating new work through energy work. All these factors make their way into my work, and I hope it calls to you, too.
